The Academy of Ability is a K-12 school providing full standard K-8 academics and K-12 special education curriculum based upon students current level of academic performance.  Our math, language arts, social studies, and science subject areas are aligned to the Florida Department of Educations Next Generation Standards and Benchmarks and from these academic goals,  lesson plans are derived to address each benchmark each quarter. Academics are presented in small group or small ratio directed by our certified educator.
The curriculum and schedule of daily school activities is specially designed to allow for integration of positioning, fostering movement, and facilitating life skills as part of each and every school day.  This focus is essential to our students not only to provide physical stimulation for motor skills development but it also serves to improve alertness and ability to focus to help our students have greater success in their academic pursuits.  Each day offers a chance to perform life skills as a part of the natural activities which occur at school.  Our trained staff encourage and facilitate our students to perform their activities of daily living as as independently as possible throughout the day.
Each activity of every day offers a chance to move.  At our school, academic activities are provided to our students to meet their needs for movement and development of motor skills.  In addition the academics, training for skills for dressing, ambulation for home and school access,  bathroom, grooming and hygiene, eating and food preparation, and community integration is provided regularly to foster greater independence in life.
Academic assessment is completed using the Brigance Inventory of School Skills to determine academic level of performance.  In addition testing occurs regular  in conjunction with presented academic activities. Additional formal testing may be utilized if deemed appropriate and useful in performance testing or educational planning.  For students who are performing academics commensurate with grade level and through election of their parent/caregiver,  The Academy of Ability will coordinate with the Local Education Agency for that student to participate in the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Testing (FCAT).
